Why Does Arthritis Feel Worse in Winter? How Physiotherapy Can Help
Written by: Dr Richard Domenic Simeoni, Physiotherapist
If you have arthritis, you've probably noticed that winter seems to make your joints feel stiffer, achier and harder to move. While the cold itself doesn't directly do any damage to your joints, many people experience an increase in pain and stiffness during the colder months. Perhaps you are one of them.
At Nano Physiotherapy in Hornsby, this is one of the most common complaints we hear throughout winter. The good news is that there are ways to reduce pain and stay active without simply waiting for warmer weather to arrive.

Does cold weather actually make arthritis worse?
This is a question that has been looked at for years. The evidence isn't completely clear, but many people with arthritis consistently report more pain during colder weather.
There are several reasons this may happen:
Muscles tend to tighten when we're cold, making joints feel stiffer.
Many people become less active during winter, which allows joints to become less mobile.
Changes in air pressure may affect sensitive joints in some people. This is a big one!!
Cold weather can make existing aches and pains feel more noticeable.
Whether it's one of these factors or a combination of all of them, the important point is that these symptoms are real and there are ways to manage them.
Why Movement Matters
One of the biggest mistakes people make is avoiding movement because they're sore.
It makes sense at first. If something hurts, resting feels like the safest option.
Unfortunately, with arthritis, too much rest often has the opposite effect. Joints become stiffer, muscles weaken, balance declines and everyday activities become even harder.
Gentle, regular movement helps keep joints lubricated, maintains muscle strength and improves confidence with daily activities.
The goal isn't to push through severe pain. It's to find the right amount of movement for your body.
What Physiotherapy Can Do
Every person experiences arthritis differently. That's why treatment should be individual rather than following the same exercises for everyone.
After assessing your joints, strength, flexibility and movement patterns, a physiotherapist can develop a plan that's specific to your needs.
Treatment may include:
Hands-on treatment to improve joint mobility.
Individual strengthening exercises.
Balance and stability training.
Advice on pacing activities.
Education about managing flare-ups.
Guidance on returning to walking, gardening or exercise.
For some people, additional treatments such as MLS Laser Therapy may also help reduce pain and improve comfort, allowing them to move more easily while continuing their rehabilitation.

Simple tips for managing arthritis this winter
There are several things you can do at home to make winter a little easier.
Keep moving every day. Even a short walk or gentle exercise session is better than staying still all day.
Warm up before activity. Heat packs, warm showers or simply moving around the house for a few minutes can help loosen stiff joints.
Stay consistent with your exercises. Small amounts done regularly are usually more effective than occasional long sessions.
Wear warm clothing. Keeping muscles and joints warm can help reduce stiffness for many people.
Don't ignore increasing pain. If your symptoms are becoming more frequent or are stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, it's worth getting assessed rather than hoping they'll settle on their own.
When should you see a physiotherapist?
Occasional stiffness is common, but it's a good idea to seek professional advice if:
Pain is lasting longer than usual.
Walking has become more difficult.
You're avoiding activities because of pain.
You're losing strength or confidence.
You're relying on pain medication more than before.
Early management is often easier than trying to regain strength and mobility after months of reduced activity.
